Abstract
Over the last two decades, a significant increase has been witnessed in the number of MA and PhD theses in the field of Arabic Language Teaching. Therefore, the departments of Arabic Language and Literature in Iranian universities felt the lack of a field independent of Arabic literature, which eventually led to the proposal for Arabic Language Teaching. Tarbiyat Modarres University (2013), the University of Isfahan (2015), and Shiraz University (2019) responded to this need. Considering that the subjects studied by the researchers determine the direction of the scientific disciplines and their approach to some extent, this study tried to find an answer to the main question “Which aspect of Arabic language teaching has been the focus of academic research?” To this aim, the present study tried to rely on the meta-analysis method to categorise the approach of 66 defended theses and dissertations (58 MA and 8 PhD theses) in the aforementioned universities in terms of the content of articles and in ten main topics. The results show that the majority of theses and dissertations have analysed content and methodology (37%), educational strategies (21%), and pragmatics (13%). Neglected topics to be studied were Arabic for children and adolescents, the impact of psychological and educational issues on language skills development, test analysis, topics examining job challenges and offering solutions that pave the way for entrepreneurship for Arabic graduates and language learners at both the national and international levels.
