Abstract

After the revelation of the Qur’an, Arabic became the language of Islamic civilization and the language of science and literature in the Islamic world. It gained a prominent status among various nations, as it was the language of Islam and played a key role in preserving the intellectual heritage of humanity. The Kurds, as part of the Islamic community, considered learning Arabic essential for understanding the Qur’an and getting to know Islam. Therefore, they adopted Arabic as their literary language and paid great attention to teaching and learning it in religious schools. These schools had a special method of teaching Arabic and strongly emphasized the study of Arabic sciences through classical sources. As a result, many Kurdish scholars composed scientific subjects in verse form to make them easier for students to memorize. One of the prominent scholars was ʿAllāma ʿAbdullāh Baytūshī, who lived in the 12th and early 13th centuries AH. He was a skilled scholar, an eloquent poet, and a refined writer who made significant contributions to Arabic language and literature, especially in morphology, grammar, and rhetoric.Among his most important works is Kifāyat al-Maʿānī fī Ḥurūf al-Maʿānī, in which he explained all the meanings of Arabic particles in verse and illustrated them with beautiful poetic examples. He also wrote three commentaries on this poem: al-Ḥafāyah bi-Tawḍīḥ al-Kifāyah, Ṣarf al-ʿInāyah bi-Kashf al-Kifāyah, and al-Kifāyah Ḥafiyyah li-Rāghib al-Ḥafāyah, in which he compiled many valuable grammatical points.
